Sony announces Xperia 1 V with sensor with separated pixel layers for 1399 euros
Sony has announced the Xperia 1 V. That phone is the company’s first to incorporate separate pixel layer technology into the camera sensor. This means that the devices have a larger dynamic range, so that the cameras capture more light.
The Xperia 1 V is a triple camera phone with the main camera having a double layer of sensors. Sony said last year that phones with such separated pixel layers would be released in 2023. In April, the company already announced a sensor with that technology, but the Xperia 1 V is the company’s first device to come on the market that actually has that technology on board. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra, released earlier in China, already has that sensor.
The main camera has a 24mm lens with an f/1.9 aperture that takes photos in 48-megapixel resolution. In that lens, the transistors and diodes are separated between the two pixel layers. This means that more surface area is available for the photodiodes, allowing pixels to collect more light per surface area and increasing the dynamic range. That should help reduce noise on an image and improve saturation.
The phone also has two other lenses. There is also a 16mm wide-angle 12-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture on the device and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with an optical zoom of 85 to 125mm with an aperture of f/2.3 to f/2.8. The phone also has a physical photo button in the housing.
The phone is also optimized for photography and video recording in terms of software. For example, Sony’s S-Cinetone color profile is on the device, which allows users to make photo and video images look more cinematic. There is also real-time eye-tracking autofocus on the device that makes it possible to keep the focus on a person’s eyes during shooting and filming.
The phone also has a 4k OLED screen of 6.5 inches with a refresh rate of 120Hz and an aspect ratio of 21:9. The battery measures 5000mAh and can charge quickly with USB Power Delivery. The smartphone also has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and the device comes with 12GB of ram and 256GB of UFS storage. The phone also has a 3.5mm connection and dual SIM support.
The phone will be available from the end of June and costs 1399 euros.
