A Windows version has been around for a while and PocketPC has also been able to handle the program for a while. Now Linux users can also take advantage of Skype, the popular program for voice-over-IP applications. Those who often use an IM program will have no trouble working through the interface of the software and can chat to their heart’s content over the internet after creating a (free) Skype account. Skype claims to produce better sound than a conventional telephone, while the minimum internet connection is only a 33.6 Kbps modem.

The Linux release is numbered 0.90.0.3 and labeled beta. The pack is free to pick up, in four flavors: two RPMs that cater for systems running Qt 3.1 or 3.2 respectively, and two tarballs for those who don’t like RPMs. Make no mistake though: the tarballs do not contain source codes but binaries; Skype is not open source.
