phpBB is a free to use forum made available under the GPL license. The forum software is one of the most widely used open source forums and uses PHP and a database program to store, save and retrieve messages. Besides MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Access are also supported as database software. Yesterday the developers of phpBB released the second beta version of the 3.0 series put onlineand may at the bottom of this document be downloaded in different archive packages. The 3.0 branch has a number of improvements over the current stable 2.0 series, including improved admin, search capabilities, and a host of other overhauled and new features. A complete overview of the most important new features can be found on this page be found, while here the changelog of phpBB 3.0 beta 2 can be found. A brief overview of the list of changes is below:

Thanks to our community ~267 bugs were spotted and fixed since the 17th June. We not only received reports about bugs but also opinions about existing features as well as reports for “strange environments”. There were also some areas where we did change a lot of functionality due to problems arising during the beta phase, these are for example the bbcode system, multiple dbms support, the server side topic tracking system and the search system. Two noticable bugs we fixed were one causing a lot of unneccessary disk usage and the other resulting in the ACP tabs being misplaced rendering the ACP navigation experience somewhat “useless”.
