Software Update: Microsoft Small Business Server 2k SP1a

Falcon says: “Microsoft has released Service Pack 1a for Small Business Server 2000. The addition to the first service pack released last August does not contain new application patches, but patches that were released for Windows 2000. Administrators who released last year have already installed the first patch do not have to do anything with the new patch, as long as their Windows 2000 systems are also neatly up-to-date. SP1a also contains the patches from Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, so linked functionality.”

Major Components Updated in This Release

• Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. This service pack addresses known security fixes for the Windows 2000 operating system. If the service pack is not already installed, you will be prompted to install it during Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a Setup. Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 is also copied to the server computer, making it available for deployment to client computers running Windows 2000 Professional. The first time users log on, they are prompted to install the service pack in attended mode. For more information, see the Windows 2000 Web site at:
• Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3. If Exchange 2000 Server is installed on the Small Business Server 2000 computer, you must also install Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3. If it is not already installed, you will be prompted to do so during Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a Setup. This service pack addresses known security fixes for Exchange 2000 Server, including QFE Q32046. • Microsoft Outlook. When installing Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a, you are given the option of installing Outlook 2002 on the server computer in administrative mode, making it available for deployment to your client computers by using the Set Up Computer Wizard.

  Outlook 2002 contains security improvements designed to protect your network from email virus and worm attacks. It also blocks access to certain file types that could spread a malicious program, allows you to specify whether you trust the source of incoming messages, and enables you to encrypt sensitive information.

Other Updates

• Small Business Server Updates. To address security and support issues, the following bug fixes have been made to Small Business Server:
  • VPN clients are able to browse the network and connect to a network shared folder.
  • Client computers running Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP can view Network Neighborhood.
  • The ASPEnableParentPaths setting for Internet Information Services (IIS) is turned off.
  • The RestrictAnonymous registry key value is now set to “1”.
  • The chance of POP3 data loss when there are more than 14 mailboxes has been eliminated.
  • Client Setup file contention with multiple users has been corrected.
• Additional Service Packs. SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 1 are included on the Additional Service Packs disc. It is recommended that you install these service packs to take advantage of their built-in security-related features. Note The Web download version of Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a does not include the Additional Service Packs disc.
