Software update: ClarkConnect Firewall/VPN 2.2 beta

Spread the love

ClarkConnect has made a new beta version available, this time it concerns the 2.2 series of which the Firewall/VPN edition will be released first. The software is capable of setting up a computer as a Linux-based dedicated gateway and server. Management can take place via a web-based interface to optimally set up the web, file and mail server. The release notes look like this:

New Features
Along with the usual feature enhancements, the following new features appear in the Firewall/VPN Edition:

  • 1-to-1 NAT
  • DMZ (3 network cards required)
  • Intrusion prevention
  • mail drop
  • Mail gateway – an antispam and antivirus scanner to protect other mail servers

The DMZ, 1-to-1 NAT, network configuration, and intrusion prevention will need some road testing.

Release Notes

  • All the service-enabled features (content filter, VPN, antivirus, antispam, intrusion detection) can not be configured until you register the system. It’s just a minor annoyance right now; the registration policy will be relaxed in the final release.
  • The intrusion prevention software might block remote VPN connections. If your VPN is not working, make sure you check the active block list on the intrusion prevention page!
  • The intrusion prevention software can take a long time to start when not connected to the Internet… just give it some time. The software is attempting DNS lookups on its internal whitelist and it has to wait for a timeout.
  • The maildrop feature won’t work in Firewall/VPN mode (only in server mode). Feel free to tinker with it though.
  • When you register the system, you will automatically receive SOHO level services. These services will be disabled at the end of the beta.
  • RAID support will be tested in the Office Edition beta.
