Software Update: Apple Quicktime 6.5.1

Apple has introduced a new technique whereby music files can be compressed without loss of quality, unlike MP3, for example. This technique, known as Apple Lossless Audio, reduces the file size to about half that of an uncompressed file. Yesterday, Apple released iTunes 4.5.0.31, which allows you to create and download files in this new format from IMS, the iTunes Music Store. Today, Apple also released firmware 2.2 for its iPods. In addition to a number of minor improvements to all models, this also brought the ability to play Apple Lossless audio files on the third-generation iPod models and the iPod Mini.

However, not everyone has an iPod or uses iTunes. That is why Apple has also released a new version of Quicktime. Since the only change from the previously released version 6.5 is to support the aforementioned new codec, the version number has only been increased to 6.5.1. The new Quicktime is available in two flavors: a web installer that only downloads what you need, or a so-called standalone-version. The latter weighs about 19MB and is only useful if you have to install Quicktime on multiple PCs. Finally, we note that Quicktime is part of iTunes. So if you already have it, you don’t need to download Quicktime 6.5.1 anymore.

With the QuickTime 6.5.1 update, you can create and play back Apple Lossless audio. This new lossless audio codec retains the full quality of uncompressed CD audio while requiring only about half the storage space. Apple Lossless Encoder can be used for importing music from CDs in iTunes 4.5.[break]
