Security firm contradicts claim that hackers had access to systems
Security firm FireEye has said there are no signs that hackers had access to its internal systems. On Sunday, a message appeared on Pastebin in which an unknown person claimed to have access to the systems. However, data from an analyst appears to have been stolen.
The post on Pastebin claims that FireEye component Mandiant has been accessed since 2016, including the company’s internal network and customer base. The message contains a link to a collection of files that contain information about a Mandiant analyst. According to Hacker News, this includes the contents of his inbox, internal FireEye and Mandiant files, presentations and the employee’s contacts. The LinkedIn page of the employee in question was also adjusted.
In a response to the post late FireEye know ‘to be aware of reports that an employee’s social media accounts have been accessed’. An investigation has been launched and so far there is no indication of actual access to FireEye or Mandiant systems.
The Pastebin release claims that the information released now “represents only part of the extent of access to Mandiant systems” and that more data will be released in the future. The campaign is called ‘LeaktheAnalist’ and targets employees in the security industry, the statement said. For the time being, it is unclear how far access to the security company’s systems actually extended. FireEye is an American security company that Mandiant acquired in 2013.
