Samsung wants to make an 11k screen for smartphones with 2250 pixels per inch in five years. That’s what the manufacturer says. Current smartphone screens have between 300 and 600 pixels per inch. The higher resolution should allow a good 3D rendering.

Samsung and the thirteen other companies that will be working on the screen want to show a first prototype at the 2018 Olympic Games, which will take place in Samsung’s home country of South Korea, ETNews reports.

With 11k, the bar is set high: TV manufacturers for much larger panels are currently preparing for 8k, four times the resolution of the also new 4k. The first 4k screens for smartphones should also appear this year or next year.

It’s unknown what the resolution for the 11k screen would be, but at one and a half times the number of pixels in height and width of an 8k screen, that would come out at 11520×6480 pixels. The mentioned 2250ppi can then be achieved by giving the screen a diagonal of around 5.9 “, a diagonal that is already common for large smartphones.
