Rumour: Nexus 5 2015 has RGBW sensor for better photos in lower light

The new Nexus 5, which should be released this fall, is rumored to have an RGBW camera sensor, which should be able to capture better photos in lower light by adding a white pixel to the traditional red, green, and blue pixels.

The sensor is Sony’s IMX278, a source on the Chinese social network Weibo reported that in recent weeks, information about hardware from various manufacturers in the telecom industry has been put online. Because his leaks started so recently, it is still difficult to check how reliable his information is.

If the new Nexus 5 were to include the IMX278, it wouldn’t be the first smartphone with this camera sensor. The Huawei P8 from this spring also has this sensor on board. The intention is that the white pixel allows the sensor to collect more light, especially from shadows, so that it should be able to capture photos with more detail and contrast in low light. The camera would have optical image stabilization and a maximum resolution of 13 megapixels.

The spec sheet also contains some details that have surfaced in rumors about the new Nexus 5, including a 5.2 “screen with ‘2k’ resolution, presumably 2560×1440 pixels. The soc is said to be a Snapdragon 808, the same soc that LG uses. himself used in his G4.
