Rumor: Samsung wants to turn TVs with Tizen OS into central Smart Home hubs

Samsung wants to make its Tizen OS for TVs the central part of its Smart Home platform, claims the Korean ETnews. Early next year, the company will release smart home refrigerators with Tizen, followed by “smart” lights and windows.

Samsung provides all its recent and future TVs with Tizen OS and from next year the devices should serve as a hub for internet-of-things applications thanks to the operating system. That’s what ETnews claims. The Korean site says it bases itself on information from Samsung, but it is unclear where the site received that information.

Samsung would like to focus on always on, connectivity and sensor recognition as central themes with the TV platform. The TV should serve as a management platform for the connection and security of home automation devices. Sensors in the TV must then provide voice control and gesture recognition, can be concluded from the text of ETnews.

Tizen is a Linux-based open source operating system that builds on the merger of the Samsung Linux Platform and the LiMo platform. Samsung uses it not only for TVs but also for smartwatches and cheap smartphones. The intention is that eventually a range of devices will run the OS, including refrigerators next year. Samsung already has a separate central hub for its SmartThings platform, but as far as we know it does not run on Tizen.
