Rumor: Samsung Galaxy Note 20 will get a 120Hz display with variable refresh

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series will get a 120Hz screen with variable refresh, according to a new rumor. This means that the high refresh rate should also be able to work at higher resolutions without the phone using too much energy.

Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and the Note 20+ could get the variable refresh through the use of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. That writes analyst Ross Young on Twitter. Young spoke earlier about a larger front screen of the Galaxy Fold 2. According to XDA Developers, this backplane technology is more energy-efficient than what Samsung now uses in OLED panels.

The Galaxy S20 series also has support for 120Hz, only these phones cannot combine this with the highest screen resolution. For example, on the 3200×1440 resolution, only 60Hz is possible, 120Hz only works if users choose a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. Incidentally, Samsung is reportedly working on an option to also make available the highest S20 resolution of 120Hz. This will probably lead to a shorter battery life.

With the Galaxy Note 20 series, the ltpo backplane should allow the phone to support a high resolution and a high refresh rate at the same time without the power consumption becoming too high. With variable refresh rate, the Note 20 could dynamically adjust the refresh rate to gain more control over power consumption, writes XDA Developers.

According to the analyst, both phones will also be slightly larger than the previous generation. With the 6.42″ screen, the Note 20 gets a large resolution of 2345×1084 pixels, making the pixel density 404ppi. This phone has a ratio of 19.5:9. The Note 20+ goes from 6.8″ to 6, 87″ and will have a 3096×1444 resolution, making the pixel density 497ppi. The aspect ratio of this phone will then become 19.3:9. Samsung will normally show the new Note phones around August. It is unclear whether the coronavirus will postpone the Note 20 series will lead.
