Rumor: Apple is working on adding generative AI to Siri, Xcode and Keynote

Apple is working to integrate its own major language model into digital assistant Siri, developer program Xcode and programs such as Pages and Keynote, financial news agency Bloomberg claims.

The smarter version of Siri should debut next year, reports Bloomberg author Mark Gurman in his newsletter. Apple is integrating features later than competitors like Google and Microsoft because the company was unprepared for the rapid advance of generative AI in the past year. Google and Microsoft were, which allowed them to integrate the technology into their apps and services much faster.

Apple is still considering whether every AI function should work locally or whether certain functions will require an internet connection. The advantage of local AI is that it was faster and more privacy-friendly, but a cloud version ensures that Apple can update functions or offer new capabilities more quickly. Competitor Google, among others, has opted for a hybrid form for its Pixel 8 phones, in which some functions can be done locally and others require an internet connection.

The generative AI in Xcode should be able to complete code, while that in Pages and Keynotes should work to help users write and create presentations by offering suggestions in advance. That is similar to how it works in Google and Microsoft services. According to the same author, Apple has been working on its own large language model since this summer.
