Rumor: Apple has stopped developing its own TV
Apple would have stopped making its own TV last year. The project to make one’s own television would have run for almost ten years, but eventually there would be too few convincing features to start producing the TV.
Instead of the TV itself, Apple is now focusing on a new version of its Apple TV set-top box and a streaming service for TV channels, reports business newspaper The Wall Street Journal. They may be coming in a few weeks, when Apple gives a keynote at its own developer conference WWDC.
Apple has had several prototypes in the ten years, the business newspaper says, based on anonymous sources. Perhaps the most innovative was a transparent glass onto which lasers projected images. However, that didn’t get off the ground, because it would consume too much power and video material didn’t look good. More recently, Apple has been working with UHD TVs and the ability to integrate video calling into TVs.
Last year, however, Apple canceled plans to release a TV, because there would be too few convincing features. The manufacturer recently entered another new market, namely that of wearables. That happened with the release of the Apple Watch last month.
