Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has said in an interview with a Japanese newspaper that he hopes to find a partner for a Super Mario movie. If successful, he says the project could be announced soon and be ready in 2020.

The director has not yet confirmed that Nintendo will and will actually make the film. According to him, there is not yet an agreement with a studio for making and producing, but it seems from his statements that there may actually be a Mario movie.

In November last year, there was already a rumor that the animation studio behind Despicable Me, Illumination Entertainment, is negotiating with Nintendo with Universal Studios about making a Mario movie. It would be an animated film. Kimishima has not gone into these specific details, so it remains unclear which companies Nintendo will partner with when the film comes out.

Several film productions have already been released around Mario. For example, in 1993 the movie Super Mario Bros. which received bad reviews. Also, in the late 1980s, an animated series appeared on television called The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Production of this series was discontinued after a single season.
