Mozilla wants to provide better support to mobile extension makers

Mozilla wants to better support developers in building extensions for the Android browser. This extra support should also make it easier to port browser extensions to a mobile version.

Mozilla writes in a blog post that this way more extensions can be added to the mobile version of the browser. The company plans to release “support for an open ecosystem at addons.mozilla.org.” In practice, that means writing new guides, making resources available, and hosting community events where developers can come together and collaborate with Mozilla on new mobile extensions.

Right now there is only one handful of extensions available for the Android mobile version of Firefox. Mozilla says that in recent years it has mainly been working on the functionality of the Android browser. “Today we have the infrastructure needed to support an open ecosystem of extensions,” the company wrote.

Mozilla hopes that developers will build new extensions, but also that it will become easier to port extensions for the desktop to the mobile version. The company says it will provide a definitive timeline at the beginning of September, but at least wants to have everything in order before the end of the year.
