Microsoft is extending support for the major updates it will release in September for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education from 18 months to 30 months. This should give system administrators more freedom in their rollout.

The support extension from 18 to 30 months only applies to Windows 10 Enterprise and Education, not Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Office 365 ProPlus. In addition, the extended support period only applies to the update scheduled for September, not to the update that will be released around March. When asked about this difference by ZDNet, Microsoft claims that companies are more likely to update their systems in the fall for budget reasons.

Microsoft further clarifies that the extension applies to the current supported versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education, versions 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803, and to future September updates from version 1809. The latter is the version that will appear as Windows 10 October 2018 . The extension was made based on feedback. “It gives customers with longer rollout cycles the time they need to plan, test and deploy,” Microsoft said.
