Microsoft studios no longer make new Xbox One games

Microsoft’s own studios are no longer working on new games for the Xbox One. What is new in this situation is that the Xbox One consoles continue to be ‘supported’ in the form of Xbox Cloud Gaming, which continues to work on that generation of consoles.

Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty confirmed this to Axios. Although no new games are being developed for the Xbox One, work on existing titles that are ‘ongoing’ will continue. An example of this is Minecraft.

The general expectation is that game developers will be better able to fully utilize the possibilities of a new generation if they do not have to invest time and energy in creating a functioning product for the previous generation. Axios does note that such a distinction in computing power also exists within the Series generation in the form of the stronger X and the weaker S. There are rumors within the games industry that that mandatory support for the Series S poses a similar barrier.

Booty goes on to say that game development cycles are getting longer. “High-end games no longer take two or three years to make. That’s four, five or six years.” According to him, this is due to 4K graphics and advanced lighting systems.

Starfield is probably the most prominent first-party Xbox Series game in development right now.
