Microsoft is releasing a modified version of Skype for users with Android versions between 4.03 and 5.1. It is an optimized app that requires less memory and less storage space.

According to Microsoft, the modified version of Skype therefore works better on devices with old Android versions. It should also improve audio and video quality on old devices and the company promises better performance in areas where the mobile networks are not so good.

Microsoft does not report exactly how those improvements work. Users of old Android devices will receive the special version of the app via an update in the coming weeks. The modified app is not available separately in the Google Play Store.

The update is probably not only intended for old devices, but also for new budget smartphones that are still sold with old Android versions. This mainly happens in emerging markets, such as India and China, where smartphones are sold from a few tens.
