Microsoft has joined the Khronos Group, the organization responsible for, among other things, the OpenGL standards. The software giant will also participate in the working group developing the WebGL standard.

Microsoft’s entry into the Khronos Group is announced at the Web3D conference held in Vancouver over the weekend. Microsoft can now also be found in the list of companies that are part of the Khronos Group.

In addition to membership in the Khronos Group, Microsoft has joined the WebGL working group. This develops the WebGL standard. WebGL is now supported by many browsers and makes it possible to display 3D images in browsers without the need for a plug-in.

By joining the working group, Microsoft is able to help shape the further development of WebGL, while the software giant called WebGL dangerous in 2011 and hinted at its own variant. Microsoft has included support for WebGL in Internet Explorer 11. Whether Microsoft also has ambitions to actively contribute to OpenGL, OpenGL ES and other standards of the Khronos Group is not yet clear.
