Microsoft has indicated that it is working on an update to ensure that users stuck on Windows 8.0 can still update to version 8.1 of the operating system. A fix is currently being tested by Microsoft.

A spokesperson for the company from Redmond informed Microsoft expert Paul Thurrott about this. The upcoming update fixes an issue that prevents users of Windows 8.0, and its Windows RT version, from updating to Windows 8.1. When the software update is ready, it will be distributed via the Windows Update program.

The update would currently be tested in ‘selected markets’, but more clarity about the procedure and the release was not given. Microsoft calls it a pilot program and describes the fix as an experiment, so it is not yet clear whether it will also offer a solution for all users. It is already possible for Windows RT users to install the fix manually.

With the update, Microsoft hopes to fix an issue that causes users to experience a blue screen of death when updating their Windows or Windows RT installation to version 8.1 of the operating system. Users have been complaining about the bug for quite some time, but there didn’t seem to be a way to fix it.

It is not the first time that a Windows update causes BSODs for some users. This was previously the case with an update for Windows 7. Even then, Microsoft released a fix.
