Microsoft has announced the end of WordPad. The free word processing program will be removed from the operating system via a future release of Windows. It is not yet clear when the time will come.

Microsoft recommends that users who work with .doc files switch to Microsoft Word. Users of .txt files can according to the company switch to Notepad. Microsoft has not yet announced the date on which the new release of Windows will be distributed and the change will take effect.

Microsoft WordPad is a free word processing program that has shipped with the Windows operating system since 1995. In 2019, it was announced that WordPad would become an optional part of Windows, together with the free drawing program Paint. Both programs could then be downloaded and installed separately via an option in the Settings menu: ‘Add a component’. It is not clear whether this will also be possible for WordPad in the future.
