MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 800 Series 5G chipset, bringing 5G to midrange smartphones this year. The first products based on the new chipset should appear in the first half of 2020.

The Dimensity 800 5G soc includes an integrated 5G modem with support for frequencies below 6GHz. There is no support for mmWave frequencies. That is also not available with MediaTek’s 5g chipset for high-end smartphones, the Dimensity 1000. However, the Dimensity 800 does offer two carrier aggregation for, among other things, smooth transitions from 5g networks. There is also support for dynamic spectrum sharing for the dynamic use of 4G and 5G on the same frequency bands.

The chipset contains four Cortex-A76 cores at 2GHz, supplemented by four frugal Coretex-A55 cores at 2GHz. The GPU calls MediaTek Dimensity 1000-class, which makes it unclear which GPU it is. The Dimensity 1000 has an ARM-based Mali-G77 MC9 GPU, which can handle maximum resolutions of 2520×1080 pixels. The 800 series supports full HD+ resolutions at up to 90Hz.

In addition, there is support for a maximum of 64-megapixel cameras or, for example, a combination of several cameras, for example a 32-megapixel sensor with a 16-megapixel sensor. Finally, MediaTek mentions the presence of an AI processing unit, with computing power of 2.4tops, or tera-operations per second. These kinds of calculation units help to relieve the processor in applications such as object recognition.
