Maxon, the maker of Cinebench R20, is forcing websites that offer the benchmark tool for download to take it offline. The new version is officially available only through the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store.

Both TechPowerUp and Guru3D have been contacted by Maxon with a request to take the download of Cinebench R20 offline. If the websites fail to do so, the company threatens legal action. Both websites have removed the download and are now pointing to the official channels.

Since the release of Cinebench R20, the benchmark tool has only been available through the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store. This means that users no longer have control over which version of the benchmark they are running.

Many benchmarkers and overclockers use the separate download versions of the benchmark software to be able to install it from a USB stick, for example. Previous versions of Cinebench were also offered as a separate download by the software maker itself. It is unknown what the reason is for Maxon to only offer the new version via the download stores of Microsoft and Apple.

However, users can create a standalone version of Cinebench R20 after downloading it from the Microsoft Store. When the software is running, the location of the files can be found by right-clicking on Cinebench.exe in Task Manager. By copying all the contents of the ‘bin’ folder a separate version of the software can be made.
