Logitech announced on Tuesday a wireless gaming headset that can be used with PCs, mobile devices and all current gaming consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Switching between Xbox and PS5 can be done directly on the headset itself and does not have to be done via the TV.

The Logitech G Astro 50 X Lightspeed, or A50 X for short, is an over-ear gaming headset that communicates wirelessly with a base station. This cradle serves as a charging stand for the headset itself, but also functions as an interface for the connected devices. On the back there are two HDMI inputs for the PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S, in both cases flanked by a USB-C connection for the microphone sound. The headphones can also receive PC audio via a third USB-C port.

With a button on the headset and base station, users switch between Xbox, PS5 and PC. The HDMI signal from a PS5 or Xbox is separated into audio and image when using the headset. The sound goes to the headphones via Logitech’s Lightspeed wireless connection, while the image is sent to the connected TV via the HDMI output. If you place the headset on its charging station, the sound is also transmitted to the TV. All HDMI ports comply with the HDMI 2.1 standard and can handle 4k, 120Hz and vrr.

Other devices, such as the Nintendo Switch, tablets and phones, can be connected to the cradle via Bluetooth. The sound of such a Bluetooth device can also be mixed with that of a gaming system connected via HDMI/USB. Because the Bluetooth receiver is in the charging station and not in the headset itself, the charging station must always be nearby to be able to connect a Bluetooth device. The A50

Uncompressed 24bit sound

According to Logitech, the Lightspeed wireless connection can handle uncompressed 24bit audio at 48kHz, over a maximum distance of 12 meters. The manufacturer does not mention exact latency figures, but promises that the audio delay via the wireless connection will be ‘unnoticeable’. The headset supports spatial audio, such as Dolby Atmos and Sony’s 3D audio. According to Logitech, the battery life is 24 hours.

Users can configure the wireless headset via Logitech’s G HUB software for PC or via the Logitech G mobile app. The software provides, among other things, an equalizer with ten sliders and a noise gate and sidetone control for the microphone. The Logitech A50 The recommended retail price is 399 euros.
