IDC: Manufacturers supplied far fewer PCs and laptops

Manufacturers of PCs and laptops delivered 29 percent fewer units last quarter than in the same period last year. Analyst firm IDC has calculated this. All manufacturers made significant cuts, without exception.

The decline in deliveries is due to lower demand, poor economic conditions and large inventories that manufacturers first had to clear. says IDC. The number of units delivered is also below the numbers of 2019 and 2018, so it is more than a return to the demand that was there before the corona pandemic broke out.

All manufacturers lost tens of percent. The strongest decline is for Apple. That fits with the rumors about limited production of the M2 SoC. That manufacturer supplied 40 percent fewer desktops and laptops, claims IDC. Lenovo, Dell and ASUS delivered approximately 30 percent fewer copies, only HP kept the damage relatively limited with a decline of 24 percent.

IDC believes lower demand will continue at least until the end of the year. There may be a large group that has purchased laptops or desktops before corona and then needs an upgrade, the analyst firm reasons. This is an estimate without having taken note of the quarterly figures of the various manufacturers. Those quarterly figures will be released in the next month and a half.
