The HTC Vive Cosmos will have two LCDs with a combined resolution of 2880×1700 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The resolution is higher than the Vive Pro and the screen door effect should be much lower because the LCDs have more sub pixels.

HTC states that the use of LCDs with RGB pixels and a resolution of 2880×1700 pixels, or 1440×1700 pixels per eye, has a limited screen door effect. The previously released Vive headsets with OLED screens use a PenTile format with fewer sub-pixels and more black space between the pixels.

According to the company, the resolution of the Vive Cosmos is an 88 percent improvement over the original Vive, which has a resolution of 2160×1200 pixels. Compared to the Vive Pro, the resolution is not much higher: the OLED screens of these glasses have a resolution of 1440×1600 pixels per eye.

In addition, the manufacturer says that the LCDs achieve a refresh rate of 90Hz, which is, for example, higher than the 80Hz of the Oculus Rift S, but lower than the 120Hz of the Valve Index. HTC does not say anything about things like the viewing angle yet. Both the original Vive and the Vive Pro have an angle of view of 110 degrees.

HTC presented the Vive Cosmos during the CES fair and recently more information about HTC’s new VR glasses came out. The model will receive six camera sensors, which should allow a larger field for the use of the motion controllers. The company showed in images that the faceplate can be removed from the headset and by means of a folding system, the glasses can be easily removed from the user’s eyes. According to the manufacturer, the VR glasses have a modular design and have inside-out tracking, which means that no external sensors are needed to detect movements.

HTC previously hinted that the Vive Cosmos is suitable for use in combination with PCs and smartphones, although nothing further is known about it. The new VR glasses should be released in the third quarter of this year. A release date or price has not yet been announced.
