GoPro lays off another 200 to 300 employees after previous reorganisations
American GoPro plans to lay off 200 to 300 employees, TechCrunch reports citing multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. The layoffs would mainly affect the drone division.
According to the sources, GoPro said in a letter to the employees who will lose their jobs that the layoffs are part of a restructuring “to better align finances with business requirements,” TechCrunch reports.
The layoffs are likely related to problems with the Karma drone, which was taken off the market in November 2016, for example, due to a risk of power outages. In February 2017, the Karma went back on sale after a fix that better locks the battery in the housing.
The employees would no longer be given tasks from today, but GoPro would still like to keep them employed until February 16. GoPro may be doing this to release news of the layoffs after the CES in Las Vegas, or to coincide with upcoming financial reporting.
It is not the first time that GoPro has undergone a reorganization. In March 2017, the company laid off 270 employees to reduce costs; that amounted to about 17 percent of the total workforce. These layoffs mainly fell at the GoPro software and media team. In November 2016, GoPro already cut about 15 percent of its staff.
