Google wants to adjust services to give children access

Google is said to be planning to adapt its services in such a way that children under the age of 13 can also legally use them. The ‘child-friendly’ Google services would, among other things, be provided with a dashboard that gives parents insight into activities.

That reports the usually well-informed The Information. According to the site, Google is working on revamping its web services so that children can use them too. Currently, children under the age of thirteen are not officially allowed to create an account. That should change after Google finishes building its kid-friendly services, though parents do need to give their child permission to create a Google account.

One of the novelties that Google is said to be working on is a dashboard that allows parents to see what their children are doing online. Also, users of an Android device who create a Google account there should indicate their age; currently this is only necessary for the web version of the Google services. Incidentally, Google does not check whether the age specified by the user is actually correct.

Earlier, there were rumors of a kid-friendly version of YouTube, which is likely part of Google’s efforts to make its services more suitable for children. By making its services more child-friendly, the internet giant probably hopes to get new growth, in order to boost the use of its services.
