Google Meet supports casting video portion of conference to television

Google Meet has now been released for the Chromecast, which means that users will be able to stream the video portion of conferences to their television screen within days. Previously, Meet was also available on the Nest Hub Max.

Users who want to transfer a Meet video calling to their television screen should use the most recent version of the Chrome browser. Meet still has to run on a desktop or laptop. Google just uses the camera, microphone and the audio of the computer used; only the video part is cast to the television. The company sees it primarily as a useful addition for teachers and students who have to work remotely.

As soon as users open their video calling session via Google Calendar or the Meet app, a ‘Cast this meeting’ option will appear. Casting works with the three existing versions of the Chromecast. It could also work on screens and televisions that have a Chromecast feature built in, such as TVs running on Android TV, although Google indicates performance may vary.

Google’s video conferencing tool has been free to use for anyone with a Google account since May, and Meet is now also available directly from the Gmail app on Android or iOS. Google competes with Zoom, among others.
