Getty Images and Nvidia unveil AI tool that generates royalty-free images
Image database Getty Images, in collaboration with Nvidia, announces an image generator called Generative AI by Getty Images. The AI tool will soon allow users to generate royalty-free images, after which the copyright license will belong to the user forever.
Generative AI by Getty Images is a tool similar to Dall-E and Stable Diffusion, where users can generate an image through a prompt. Getty Images uses Nvidia’s Edify model for this. Nvidia also uses the same model for the Picasso image generator. For security reasons and to combat misinformation, it is not possible to generate known persons.
The model is trained for Getty’s generative AI on images from the Getty Images Creative database, which allows users to… according to the company do not have to worry about possible copyright infringement. The user who generates an image can license the specific image through Getty Images, which will then be exclusive to the user in perpetuity. Generated images are also not added to Getty’s database and therefore cannot be used by others. The company says it will compensate photographers and other makers for the use of their footage in the training data.
For now, only a demo of Generative AI by Getty Images is available; users can request a demo to get a taste of the tool. It is not clear when the tool will be fully released. As far as we know, use of the tool is covered by the current subscription, but Getty has not yet provided further details about any costs. The company promises that users can later also upload their own data to train the model, for example so that it can generate images in a certain brand style. This feature should be released later this year.
It is not the first time that Getty Images has done something with AI. The company previously opposed generative AI from Stable Diffusion due to alleged copyright infringement. The image library also imposed a ban on uploading AI-generated images. That seems unchanged for the time being.
