Gamer makes original SNES controller wireless

A gamer has made the SNES controller wireless by adding bluetooth and a battery. This makes it possible to play wirelessly with the original controller and the original SNES or SNES Classic Mini.

The easiest way to make an SNES controller wireless is of course cutting the cord, but that makes gaming difficult. That’s why Hackaday user smj4306 decided to transfer the commands of pressing the buttons via bluetooth, according to his project page.

The setup works with a bluetooth module in both the controller and the console. An ATmega328P captures the input from the buttons and the bluetooth module sends it to a module attached to the console. Those bluetooth modules are HC-05s. It sends the signal via the I2C bus to the console. The latency of the whole process would be about two frames.

To make the controller work wirelessly, smj4306 has added a 330mAh battery, which gets its power via a micro USB port. To top it all off, there’s also an RGB LED on the front for pairing status and for indicating battery charge. The gamer has tested the wireless controller with an SNES Classic Mini, but it should also work with the old SNES or with PCs running an emulator.
