The next Need for Speed game has been delayed by a year. Laura Miele, chief studio officer at EA, reports this in an interview with Polygon. The game has not been scrapped, but Criterion is currently supporting the development of the upcoming Battlefield game.

Miele cites, among other things, the working conditions during the pandemic as the reason for the postponement, Polygon writes. The acquisition of Codemasters also plays a role in this decision, as that studio will release at least one new racing game for EA later this year. Miele therefore argues that the reassignment of Criterion is a ‘rational decision’.

Electronic Arts reported to investors in November that the publisher will release new Battlefield and Need for Speed games before March 2022, but the company is now coming back to this. Need for Speed will be delayed by a year and should be released by March 2023 at the latest. Miele also emphasizes that the franchise will not be deleted or transferred to Codemasters or any other EA studio. “Criterion Games gets back to work with Need for Speed.” The next title in this racing franchise would also be released for the current- and last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

DICE LA, headed by Respawn CEO Vince Zampella since last year, is also contributing to the upcoming Battlefield game. That studio would mainly work on the live service parts of the game. The company has been working on this for a little over a year now, reports Miele.

The new Battlefield game is expected at the end of this year. Although EA has not yet named an official title for the game, the game is rumored to be called Battlefield 6. According to Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson, the game would return to a contemporary setting and get a multiplayer mode with up to 128 simultaneous players. Miele did not comment on these rumors in the interview with Polygon.
