Daimler wants to release about ten thousand autonomous driving cars for taxi purposes by 2021. Initially, the ‘robot taxis’ should be put into use in the United States and Europe.

The autonomous vehicles that Daimler is working on together with Bosch, also German, are still in the testing phase, but production should start ‘soon’. Michael Hafner makes this known to Automobilwoche. Hafner is responsible for the project at Daimler to make autonomous vehicles. Daimler and Bosch have been working on the techniques for two years and want to carry out tests in the US state of California with a fleet of cars in the second half of this year.

Daimler is negotiating with several cities about the introduction of a taxi service with autonomous cars. An introduction in China should follow after the US and Europe, or so the plan is. Daimler and Bosch use the Nvidia platform for their implementation and deploy radar, video, ultrasonic sensors and lidar.

The Bosch and Daimler development teams are working on the techniques in Stuttgart, Germany, and around Sunnyvale, California. Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz business unit has been authorized to test autonomous driving in the US region since 2014. Since 2016, this also applies to the German Sindelfingen/Böblingen region.

Daimler aims for a rapid introduction of fully autonomous mobility at SAE levels 4 and 5. The company faces competition from, among others, Alphabets Waymo, which also aims for a rapid introduction of autonomous taxis.
