Construction of TSMC’s 4nm fab in Arizona is delayed due to a shortage of installers
Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC is delaying the completion of a new chip factory in Arizona by a year; construction is now scheduled to be completed in 2025. TSMC reports that there are not enough workers with the skills to install the equipment.
TSMC CEO Mark Liu further reports in the discussion of the latest quarterly figures that it therefore plans to temporarily send technicians from Taiwan to Arizona. It reportedly has 500 experienced employees, Nikkei previously wrote. These people will train the local installers. This is what Reuters writes, among others.
The fab in question has been built since 2021 and will work on TSMC’s 4nm process. The company is also working on a second factory that will produce 3nm chips. It should open its doors in 2026 and does not appear to have been delayed at the moment.
The construction of the factories is partly subsidized by the American government. With such steps, the aim is to be less dependent on chip production in China.
