British provider TalkTalk lost 95,000 customers due to hack

The hack at the British provider TalkTalk, in which data from 157,000 customers was stolen in October 2015, resulted in 95,000 customers canceling their subscription. The financial damage amounts to 60 million pounds, according to the provider.

TalkTalk lost 101,000 customers in the last quarter of 2015, Wired writes based on the provider’s quarterly figures. 95,000 of those customers would have left because of the hack that the ISP suffered in October 2015. TalkTalk says it has suffered £40 to 45 million in additional costs as a result of the hack and the company would have lost £15 million in market capitalization. The total damage thus amounts to a maximum of 60 million pounds, converted approximately 79 million euros.

The hackers had access to personal data of 157,959 customers. Initially, it appeared that data from many more customers had been stolen in the hack. TalkTalk later said that the hackers never had access to the provider’s systems, but that only the website had been hacked. TalkTalk offered existing customers a free upgrade after the hack came to light. 500,000 people would have used it.

The investigation into the case is still ongoing. British police arrested a total of three suspects, including a 15- and 16-year-old boy. They were released after paying bail.
