Borderlands 3 will get crossplay, but not with PlayStation consoles

Borderlands 3 will receive crossplay support, with the exception of PlayStation consoles. The developer has an update ready that makes crossplay possible on all platforms, but the publisher has to remove PlayStation support.

Randy Pitchford, the chief executive of Borderlands developer Gearbox, says on Twitter that crossplay support on PlayStation consoles should be removed from the update at the direction of the publisher. No reason is given for this.

Earlier this month, the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple revealed that Sony will claim a share of the revenue if players play cross-play games primarily on a PlayStation console. Borderlands publisher 2K Games may not want to make such agreements with Sony.

Sony rules for cross-play games

In Borderlands 3, players can purchase skins for vehicles and weapons. Sony gets a 30 percent commission on all spending made through PlayStation consoles. With the cross-platform revenue share rules Sony has come up with, the company would get a cut of the revenue if players mainly play on their PlayStation but spend the expenses on another platform.

Borderlands 3 is available on PCs, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and on Google Stadia. Crossplay between the Xbox, PC and Stadia versions will soon become possible. It is not yet known when the necessary update will be released.
