Apple to publish research on artificial intelligence from now on

Apple has decided to publish and share findings of its research into artificial intelligence with the rest of the research community. The company is thus following the example of Google and Facebook, among others.

The move is quite unusual for Apple, a company that has traditionally placed a high value on secrecy. However, it seems that the only way to keep up with the competition in this area is to share studies with the world while also taking advantage of other studies. In addition, the openness would attract good AI researchers, who are now also allowed to publish their findings, Wired writes.

The advantage over the competition should not lie in the technology itself, but in the researchers that the companies have in-house and what datasets the artificial intelligences can use with their deep learning algorithms. Apple has also never been as aggressive as its competitors when it comes to customer data collection, but that may have to end in the name of AI datasets too.

Ruslan Salakhutdinov, a former researcher at Carnegie Mellon University and now chief of AI at Apple, announced the decision on Tuesday during a presentation at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems in Barcelona.
