Apple will refund 60 euros to customers who have had the battery of their iPhone 6 or newer replaced in 2017. Customers will receive an email about this. Apple lowered the price of the replacement at the end of 2017, because the manufacturer had deliberately slowed down iPhones to prevent failure.

The refund applies to customers who have their battery replaced on an iPhone 6 or newer between January 1, 2017 and December 28 of the same year, Apple reports. With this, the manufacturer meets customers who paid the full price in 2017; customers who subsequently had their battery replaced paid a lower price.

The price went down from 89 euros to 29 euros and customers now get that price difference of 60 euros, Apple says. The manufacturer lowered the price of the repair because of the fuss about the slowing down of iPhones. The American company built a function in iOS to make the user experience slower if the software detected aging of the battery. That was necessary to prevent iPhone failures; older batteries, especially of the smaller models, were no longer able to cope with the peak load of the soc. Apple didn’t say how that could happen.

The lower price for replacing the battery applies until the end of 2018. iOS 11.3, which was released this spring, now includes a function to see for yourself how much of the maximum capacity the battery still has and the delay of the software can be turned off.
