Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed at an employee meeting on Wednesday that the company recently sold its billionth iPhone. At the end of the quarter that ended at the end of June, the counter stood at more than 988 million copies.

In January 2007, Apple introduced the first iPhone. In less than ten years, the American smartphone maker has sold a billion units of all the different models that have appeared in the iPhone series.

Tim Cook announced the milestone to his employees at a meeting in Cupertino. There are no further details on the quantity of the separately sold models, nor is it clear when exactly the billionth copy went over the counter. Apple’s financial figures showed that the milestone had not yet been reached at the end of the quarter that ended at the end of June.

Since the release of the iPhone, Apple has been able to record a year on year growth in the number of delivered devices. This has changed for the first time since this year. Growth stalled in January, but Apple still recorded a small plus. A quarter later, in April, Apple for the first time had to report that fewer iPhones had been delivered than in the comparable quarter a year earlier. The quarterly figures presented on Tuesday also show a decrease.

Despite declining growth, the iPhone is still Apple’s most successful product and will likely remain so for a long time to come. Apple owes the majority of its revenue to the smartphone. At the most recent quarterly figures, iPhone sales accounted for $24 billion in revenue, more than half of the $42 billion quarterly revenue.
