Apple deploys 8-pin USB port to make Lightning and USB-C compatible
Apple will introduce an 8-pin port called the Ultra Accessory Connector for accessories with a Made for iPhone label. That connector is a traditional 8-pin variant on ‘ultra mini’ USB, such as is also found on some cameras, for example.
The port should appear on headsets, for example, so that they can work with the USB-c ports on recent MacBooks as well as lightning ports on iOS devices, 9to5 Mac reports. Currently, accessory makers have to choose whether headsets work with lightning or usb-c. The eight-pin port allows headsets to use both ports that Apple uses on devices. Accessory makers are said to make headsets with the new connector and users can connect them to devices with dongles.
Apple is currently testing the Ultra Accessory Connector with accessory makers, reports The Verge, who also heard the information from the Apple site. It is unknown why the hardware maker would opt for the old small USB variant, which can be found on Nikon cameras, for example.
It is unknown when accessories with the UAC should appear. It’s also unclear why Apple chose not to put lightning ports on MacBooks or USB-C ports on iOS devices, which would make the UAC obsolete in one fell swoop.
Update, 8:29 AM: As tweaker Faab the nth points out, Apple has confirmed the information to Ars Technica. Apple says it has allowed the port at the request of accessory makers. The message has been adjusted accordingly.
