Apple has acquired Fleetmith, a company that offers mobile device management tools for Apple devices. With that, Apple is going to do business device management for the first time, something that has so far only been done by third-party companies.

Fleetsmith will continue to offer its services after the takeover, which means that Apple will have its own MDM offering for the first time. “Our shared values (…) means that we can truly fulfill our mission of delivering Fleetmith to companies and institutions of all sizes around the world,” Fleetsmith founders said in the announcement.

It is noticeable that the company itself announces that there is an acquisition by Apple. Apple makes dozens of acquisitions a year, but in many cases it comes out in other ways than with an official announcement.

Mdm services on Apple devices have so far been provided by third parties such as ZuluDesk, Jamf, Mobile Iron and Mosyle. Apple itself has not yet explained the acquisition. It is also unknown how much Apple pays to acquire Fleetsmith.
