AMD introduces first Ryzen laptop processor with 3D V-Cache in ASUS ROG laptop
AMD introduces its Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. This is the first laptop processor to feature stacked 3D V-Cache, for a total of 128MB L3 cache. The processor will be introduced in a ROG Strix Scar 17 laptop from ASUS, which will be released on August 22.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D has 16 Zen 4 cores and 32 threads. The processor has two CPU chiplets of eight cores each, in addition to an I/O die. One of the CPU chiplets has 64MB of stacked 3D V-Cache, for a total of 128MB of L3 cache. The structure is therefore comparable to that of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor for desktops. AMD also says that the laptop processor has a TDP of 55W and boost clocks of up to 5.4GHz.
It is the first time that AMD has introduced its 3D V-Cache technology in a laptop processor. The 3D stacked cache made its debut in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which was released last year. With 3D V-Cache, an additional 64MB of L3 cache is placed on top of the CPU chiplet. According to AMD, this will, among other things, benefit gaming performance. The manufacturer claims that its Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is on average more than 15 percent faster in games than its ‘regular’ Ryzen 9 7945HX, which does not have 3D V-Cache but otherwise has identical specifications.
AMD will release the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D on August 22. The CPU will then appear in an ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17. AMD says during a briefing with journalists that the CPU will be available exclusively in that laptop ‘for the near future’. It is therefore unknown if and when the processor will appear in other laptops.
