AMD introduces Embedded versions of its new EPYC 9004 server processors. These come with up to 96 cores and DDR5 support. The processors are currently being sampled at partner companies. The production versions should be delivered in April.

The AMD EPYC 9004 Embedded chips are based on the previously released EPYC 9004 Genoa processors. The new variants are intended for use in embedded applications such as telecom, iot and edge computing, where efficiency is important. The company is introducing EPYC Embedded variants that support two sockets, in addition to processors with a P suffix that support up to one socket.

The chips use the Zen 4 microarchitecture that is also used in AMD’s Ryzen 7000 desktop processors and the EPYC 9004 server CPUs. The CPU chiplets are produced at TSMC 5nm, while the I/O die is produced at 6nm. The Embedded variants have a maximum of 96 cores and 192 threads per CPU. The manufacturer also comes with models with 64, 48, 32, 24 and 16 cores. In addition, the chips have a maximum of 384MB L3 cache, twelve DDR5 memory channels, 128 or 160 PCIe 5.0 lanes and TDPs from 200 to 400W.

The processors are also equipped with some Embedded-specific functions. The processors are provided with non-transparent bridging for data exchange between two redundant processors within a system. This works via PCIe lanes and should ensure better reliability. In addition, the chips will support Nvdimm memory. Such memory modules are provided with additional flash memory, which serves as a backup in the event of a power failure. The EPYC Embedded 9004 Series also gets dual-spi, so companies can use their own bootloader to verify the system BIOS.

AMD has started shipping EPYC Embedded 9004 samples to select customers. According to the chip designer, production versions are expected to follow in April. The chips will soon be used in enterprise equipment from Advantech and Siemens, AMD writes.
