Qualcomm has shown the Snapdragon 870-soc as the successor to the Snapdragon 865 Plus. With the new soc, one of the Kryo 585 CPU cores runs at a maximum of 3.2GHz, where the Snapdragon 865 Plus offers a maximum of 3.09GHz. The new soc is coming to phones later this year.

The Kryo 585 CPU of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870-soc has eight cores, where the Prime Core can run at the highest clock speed, Qualcomm reports. The soc consists of four Arms Cortex A77-based cores and four Cortex A55-based cores. The Prime Core is one of those A77 cores. The manufacturer does not report anything about the clock speed of the other seven cores. Presumably, as with the Snapdragon 865-soc, three A77 cores that work at 2.42GHz and four A55 cores that run at 1.8GHz.

The GPU of the Snapdragon 870-soc is the Adreno 650, it probably has the same improvements as the 865 Plus-soc and performs up to ten percent faster than the regular 865-soc. Like the two previously mentioned socs, the 870 has support for a maximum screen resolution of 3840×2160 pixels at 60Hz. The soc can also handle a refresh rate of 144Hz, but then the resolution is limited to 3200×1800 pixels. The soc supports up to 200MP cameras, can record videos at a resolution of 7680×4320 pixels at 30fps or record slow motion footage at 960fps at a maximum resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

For 5G connections, the soc must be linked to Qualcomm’s X55 modem. It supports mmWave frequencies and sub-6GHz frequencies and allows a maximum speed of 7Gbit/s. Furthermore, the 870-soc has support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

Qualcomm expects that the first smartphones with the new socs will be announced in this quarter. The company lists Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi as companies looking to use the soc in their upcoming flagships. The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro and the ASUS ROG Phone 3, among others, were equipped with the 865 Plus soc. The original 865-soc has been used in more phones.
