Nearly two years after its appearance, the Proton tool in Steam Play has made more than 6,500 games for Windows playable on Linux. Grand Theft Auto V is the most popular game that players run like this and it works well.

A total of 6502 Windows games on Steam via Proton are running on Linux, reports ProtonDB, which is not affiliated with Steam or Valve. The site keeps statistics on how well the games are running, based on user feedback.

Sixty percent of the top ten most popular games would run fine, whether or not after a few tweaks. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2 are the most popular on Steam Play and they run on Linux by default. PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is next the most popular but it has many problems on Linux. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is also not yet working. According to ProtonDB statistics, the popular game Grand Theft Auto V runs well via Proton.

Valve co-developed Proton with Codeweavers and released it in 2018. The tool is a modified version of Wine. The implementations of DirectX 11 and 12 are based on Vulkan, with DXVK and vkd3d respectively offering compatibility with Direct3D 11 and 12. Valve is actively working on the tool. Last week Proton 5.0-6 appeared.
