The chat service Telegram has indicated that it now has more than 35 million users. The alternative to Whatsapp has recently received many new registrations.

Telegram announces this via a message on Twitter. Furthermore, the makers of the chat service have not released any information. As a result, it is unclear how many users are on iOS or Android. Google’s Play Store reports that the number of installations is between 10 and 50 million, but more precise figures are not available. Apple’s App Store does not provide download figures. Telegram does not indicate how many of the users are actually active.

Telegram quickly became known as an alternative to the popular Whatsapp after the latter announced it would be acquired by Facebook for an amount of 11.6 billion euros. The day after the takeover, Telegram let go of the fact that half a million users had been added in one day. Telegram profiles itself as a chat service that values privacy and offers, among other things, encrypted chat.
