Taking selfies in Doom

Almost 22 years after the release of Doom, the ‘primal shooter’ continues to occupy the minds. A hobbyist has built a mod with which the game can be played with different color filters. In addition, a ‘selfie’ can now be taken in the game.

The mod is called InstaDoom and only appeared on the fansite Doomworld. Modder Linguica added no less than 37 Instagram filters to its variant, from dark gray to tropical colored. He also came with a ‘selfie’ function. This allows the main character to take a picture with the most gruesome monsters at all locations – of course with a selfie stick. That stick replaces the BFG weapon, while that weapon is swapped with the chainsaw. This makes it quicker to take a ‘selfie’.

Id Software released Doom in 1993 via an upload to a University of Wisconsin FTP server. The engine was more complex than that of Wolfenstein 3D and brought some new features to 3D shooters, such as fading light, height differences in levels and texture mapping. In order for the game to run smoothly on slower processors such as Intel 80386 models, it was possible to run the game with less detail.

The classic is set on the moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, where the Union Aerospace Corporation has a space base and experiments with teleportation. The moons are overrun with monsters and demons, which appear from a gateway to hell beneath the moon’s surface. Now you can take a picture with it together in different poses. “After more than 22 years, Doom is finally finished,” said game site Kotaku.
