Synology announced the DS1821 +, an eight-bay NAS that features an embedded AMD Ryzen V1500B. The DS1621 + introduced in October already has this AMD chip, although it has six slots instead of eight.
The DiskStation DS1821 + should be seen as the successor to the DS1819 +, where an important difference is the processor. The older model is the Intel Atom C3538-soc and the new model the AMD Ryzen V1500B. This chip from AMD is, among other things, more powerful because eight threads can be handled and more instruction sets are supported. Synology says this AMD processor offers more than twice the computing power of its predecessor.
Like the DS1621 +, the DS1821 + can accommodate two M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching purposes. There are four gigabit ethernet connections available. Although the AMD Ryzen V1500B does support it, the DS1821 + does not yet have native support for 10GbE. Synology says users may have the option to expand network bandwidth by adding SFP + modules or network cards for 10GbE.
The DS1821 + performs almost the same as the DS1621 +, according to Synology’s own page. It can be seen there that the manufacturer has measured maximum sequential throughput speeds of 2.3 GB / s in read and 1.1 GB / s in write. With 4kB random read, the nas performs a fraction better than the DS1621 +: 113,458 versus 110,608iops. Such performance does require the installation of 10gbE nic’s via PCIe network interface cards.
Synology announces that the DiskStation DS1821 + will get a suggested retail price of 860 euros. However, that is without VAT. With VAT, the price comes to 1040 euros. The DS1621xs + announced in September does offer better specifications and performance, but that system has not appeared in the Plus Series, but in the more expensive xs + series.
