Spotify pulls Lite app for Android from beta

Spotify has officially released its Lite app for Android in 36 countries. The app is 10MB in size and contains a function to set a data limit. The app has been available in beta since last year and is intended for emerging markets.

Spotify Lite is suitable for devices with Android 4.3 or newer and can be used separately or in addition to the existing app. Spotify aims with the app at users who listen to music in regions where data bundles and internet speed are limited. Users can set a data limit and receive a notification when they approach it. Playing music via 2g also works.

Furthermore, the app has an option to clear the cache. It contains previously listened music and users can easily delete it if they are short on space. Also, the interface looks different; instead of the Music Library, the Lite version has a Favorites section, where users can store songs and favorites.

Spotify Lite lacks support for Spotify Connect and it is also not possible to download music for offline listening. The Lite version already appeared in beta last year, when the app was still 15MB in size. The regular version of Spotify is about 100MB in size.

The Lite app is now available in 36 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America. The app should come to more markets later, but whether Spotify also plans to release the Lite version in the Benelux is unknown. A spokesperson for the music streaming service tells TechCrunch that there are no plans for an iOS version.
