Rumor: Next HTC smartphone will have 13Mp front camera with dual flash

An upcoming smartphone from HTC, according to two well-established telecom insiders, has a front camera with a maximum resolution of thirteen megapixels with double LED flash. It would be the first time that the manufacturer puts such a front camera on a device.

Telecom insiders Paul O’Brien of the site Modaco and custom rom developer LlabTooFeR speak about HTC’s new devices on Twitter. It is a variant of the HTC One (M8) codenamed M8_Eye and another device that is still known as Eye.

Nothing is known about the Eye except for the front camera. It would not be the first phone that can take selfies with a resolution of 13 megapixels: the Oppo N1 with rotatable camera can do that too. The ZTE Nubia X6 has a regular front camera with a resolution of 13 megapixels. Acer also made a device with a flash on the front, but that front camera has a lower resolution.

Rumors have already surfaced about the M8_Eye: it would have a larger screen than the regular One (M8), with a diagonal of 5.2 “instead of 5”. In theory, that would fit in the same housing, but whether HTC will do that is unclear. HTC would exchange the 4-megapixel camera on the back for one with a maximum resolution of 13 megapixels; that would mean HTC move away from the Ultrapixel camera modules with lower resolutions and larger pixels that it has been using for a year and a half.

The manufacturer will hold an event in New York next week, where it will probably present its upcoming smartphones. There it will probably also present its GoPro competitor with periscope shape. The invitation to the event entitled ‘double exposure’ already seems to be a hint that HTC is focusing on cameras during the announcements.
